Coachman was born in Rochester, Minnesota. He has two older sisters. His father was a high school football coach and his mother was a schoolteacher. Coachman was a three-sport athlete in high school, playing football, basketball, and track. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1993 with a degree in broadcast journalism.
Coachman began his career as a sports anchor and reporter for KSTP-TV in Minneapolis/St. Paul. He also worked as a sports anchor and reporter for WCCO-TV in Minneapolis/St. Paul and KARE-TV in Minneapolis/St. Paul. In 1998, he joined ESPN as a sports anchor and reporter. He has also worked as a host and commentator for ESPN Radio and ESPNEWS.
Coachman has been with WWE since 1999, originally working as a backstage interviewer and commentator. He has also hosted WWE Raw and WWE SmackDown.
