John Dukakis was born on November 3, 1933, in Brookline, Massachusetts, to Ethel (née Frank) and Panos Dukakis. His parents were Greek immigrants. He has two brothers, Michael and Ted. Dukakis attended Brookline High School, where he was active in sports and played football and basketball. He graduated from Swarthmore College in 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. He then earned a Master of Arts degree in political science from Harvard University in 1956.
Dukakis began his political career as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, serving from 1963 to 1971. He was elected Governor of Massachusetts in 1974 and served from 1975 to 1979. He was re-elected in 1978 and served until 1983. During his tenure as governor, Dukakis oversaw the implementation of the state’s first income tax, enacted major reforms to the state’s welfare system, and expanded the state’s Medicaid program. He also oversaw the construction of the Boston Harbor cleanup project.
Dukakis ran for president in 1988, but lost the Democratic nomination to Michael Dukakis. He then ran for governor again in 1990 and was re-elected to a fourth term. He retired from politics in 1997 and has since worked as a professor at Northeastern University and as a consultant.
