John Bright (1811-1889) was a British politician who was one of the main leaders of the anti-slavery movement and one of the most prominent advocates of free trade. He was born in Rochdale, Lancashire, the son of a Quaker wool merchant. Bright was educated at a Quaker school in York and then at Ackworth School in Yorkshire. He began working in his father’s business at the age of sixteen. In 1833, Bright’s father sent him to America to learn about the wool trade. While in America, Bright became interested in politics and the anti-slavery movement. He returned to England in 1837 and became active in the campaign to abolish slavery.
