John Bright (1811-1889) was a British politician who was one of the main leaders of the anti-slavery movement and one of the most prominent advocates of free trade. He was born in Rochdale, Lancashire, the son of a Quaker wool merchant. Bright was educated at a Quaker school in York and then at Ackworth School in Yorkshire. He began working in his father’s business at the age of sixteen. In 1833, Bright’s father sent him to America to learn about the wool trade. While in America, Bright became interested in politics and the anti-slavery movement. He returned to England in 1837 and became active in the campaign to abolish slavery.

In 1838, he helped to found the Anti-Slavery Society. Bright was also a leading advocate of free trade. He was elected to Parliament in 1843 as a member of the Free Trade Association. He became one of the most prominent members of Parliament, speaking out against slavery and campaigning for free trade. In 1846, he helped to found the Free Trade League. Bright served as President of the Board of Trade from 1858 to 1859.

He also served as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from 1859 to 1865. Bright retired from politics in 1865. He died in 1889.
