Joe Jackson was born in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, on August 11, 1954. His father, John, was a coal miner who played the clarinet and saxophone in local bands; his mother, Elizabeth, was a homemaker. Jackson had three brothers and a sister. He was educated at St. Peter’s Primary School and then at de Ferrers Grammar School in Burton.
Jackson began playing the violin at age 11, and he soon joined his first band, a school group called the New Originals. He later recalled that he was “never really that interested in music” as a child, but he enjoyed playing the violin and found it a good way to make friends.
Jackson’s musical career began in earnest when he moved to London at age 17 to study at the Royal Academy of Music. He soon dropped out of school, however, and began playing in clubs and bars around the city. In 1976, he formed his first band, Joe Jackson Band, with which he released his debut album, Look Sharp!, the following year. The album was a commercial and critical success, and it established Jackson as a talented and original songwriter.
Jackson’s subsequent albums, including I’m the Man (1979), Beat Crazy (1980), and Night and Day (1982), were also well received by critics and fans alike. In 1984, he released Body and Soul, an album that featured the hit single “You Can’t Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want).”
Jackson’s popularity continued to grow in the late 1980s and early 1990s with the release of albums such as Blaze of Glory (1989) and Laughter & Lust (1991). He also found success as a film composer, scoring the films The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988) and Home Alone (1990).
In 1999, Jackson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He has continued to release new albums in the 21st century, including Rain (2008) and Fast Forward (2015).
Jackson has been married twice. His first marriage, to Hazel O’Connor, ended in divorce; his second marriage, to Diane Krall, has lasted since 2000. He has three children.
Jackson’s net worth is estimated to be $40 million.
