Jasper Johns was born on May 15, 1930, in Augusta, Georgia, the first of two sons of Matilda and William Jasper Johns. His father, a farmer, died in 1934, when Jasper was four years old. His mother remarried two years later, to a man named Robert Snedecor. Jasper Johns spent his childhood in Allendale, South Carolina, with his maternal grandparents. He began drawing at an early age, and was encouraged by his grandfather, who was an amateur artist. Johns attended the University of South Carolina from 1947 to 1948, and then transferred to the Parsons School of Design in New York City. He interrupted his studies in 1950 to serve in the United States Army, during the Korean War. After his discharge, he returned to Parsons, and graduated in 1952.
Johns’ early paintings were primarily flag and target motifs. These works brought him to the attention of the art world, and he had his first solo exhibition in 1958. In the 1960s, Johns began experimenting with different materials and techniques, including encaustic and collage. He also began incorporating words and numbers into his paintings, a practice that he has continued throughout his career. Johns has said that he wants his paintings to be “about something,” but that he is more interested in the process of painting than in the finished product.
Johns has been married twice. His first wife was the artist Robert Rauschenberg; they were married from 1954 to 1962. His second wife is the painter Alex Katz; they have been married since 1973. Johns has three children: two sons with Rauschenberg, and a daughter with Katz.
Johns’ work is represented in many major museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. He has been awarded numerous honors, including the National Medal of Arts (1990) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2011). Johns’ work is highly valued by collectors; a painting from his “Flag” series sold for $110 million at auction in 2018, setting a record for a work by a living artist.
Johns is one of the most important and influential artists of the postwar era. His work has helped to shape the course of contemporary art, and his influence can be seen in the work of many younger artists.
