He is one of the most internationally known modern composers from the Balkans. Bregović was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina (then Yugoslavia) to a Serbian father and Croatian mother. He spent his childhood in Sarajevo, where he finished music school and enrolled in the Academy of Music. He was a member of several rock bands in Yugoslavia before becoming a solo artist.

Bregović’s first solo album, Goran Bregović and His Wedding and Funeral Band, was released in 1971. The album was a fusion of traditional folk music from the Balkans with rock and roll. It was a commercial success and launched Bregović’s career.

Bregović’s most famous work is the score for the film Underground (1995), which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He has also composed the scores for several other films, including Time of the Gypsies (1988), Arizona Dream (1993), Queen Margot (1994), and Kusturica’s Black Cat, White Cat (1998).
