Bregović was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina (then Yugoslavia) to a Serbian father and Croatian mother. He spent his childhood in Sarajevo, where he finished music school and enrolled in the Academy of Music. He was a member of several rock bands in Yugoslavia before becoming a solo artist.
Bregović’s first solo album, Goran Bregović and His Wedding and Funeral Band, was released in 1971. The album was a fusion of traditional folk music from the Balkans with rock and roll. It was a commercial success and launched Bregović’s career.
Bregović’s most famous work is the score for the film Underground (1995), which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He has also composed the scores for several other films, including Time of the Gypsies (1988), Arizona Dream (1993), Queen Margot (1994), and Kusturica’s Black Cat, White Cat (1998).
Bregović has been married three times and has four children. His first wife was Croatian singer Vesna Pisarović, with whom he had two daughters. His second wife was Serbian folk singer Lepa Lukić, with whom he had a son. His third wife is Bulgarian pop singer Azis.
Bregović has a net worth of $30 million. He has composed the scores for over 50 films and has sold over 20 million records worldwide.
