George Gordon Liddy (born November 30, 1930) is an American former government official, lawyer and political operative. He is best known as the chief operative in the Watergate scandal, for which he was convicted and served over four years in prison.
Liddy was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Sylvester James Liddy and Maria (née Costello) Liddy. His father was of Irish descent and his mother was of Italian descent. He has three brothers and one sister. Liddy was raised a Roman Catholic and attended Fordham Preparatory School. He went on to attend Fordham University, where he played football and was a member of the ROTC. He graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree in government.
Liddy began his career as an FBI agent. He later worked as a lawyer in private practice and as a prosecutor for the District of Columbia. In 1971, he was recruited by G. Gordon Liddy (no relation) to work for the Nixon re-election campaign. Liddy rose to prominence during the Watergate scandal, when he was convicted of conspiracy, burglary and wiretapping. He served over four years in prison before being pardoned by President Jimmy Carter in 1977.
After his release from prison, Liddy wrote a best-selling book about his experiences, titled Will: The Autobiography of G. Gordon Liddy (1980). He also hosted a radio talk show and appeared on television. In recent years, he has been a vocal supporter of Donald Trump.
Liddy has been married twice. His first marriage, to Joanne Diane (née Mitchell), ended in divorce. He has four children from his first marriage: Thomas Gordon, James Edward, Mary Catherine, and Margaret Ann. His second marriage, to Frances Purcell, lasted from 1992 until her death in 2010.
