Émilie du Châtelet was a French mathematician, physicist, and author during the early Enlightenment. She is best known for her translation of Isaac Newton’s Principia Mathematica, and for her own scientific work on the nature of heat.
Born in Paris on December 17, 1706, Émilie was the daughter of Louis Nicolas le Tonnelier de Breteuil, a marquis and member of the French nobility, and Gabrielle Émilie le Tonnelier de Breteuil, Marquise du Châtelet. Émilie was the couple’s third child and only daughter. She had two older brothers, Louis-Alexandre and Gabriel.
Émilie’s parents were not particularly interested in her education, but they did hire tutors to teach her to read and write. When she was eleven years old, Émilie was sent to a convent school in Paris. There she received an excellent education in literature, history, and philosophy.
In 1725, Émilie married the Marquis du Châtelet, a French nobleman. The couple had three children together: two daughters and a son.
Although she was a marquise and a mother, Émilie did not give up her love of learning. She continued to study mathematics and physics, even attending lectures at the University of Paris. In 1734, she met Voltaire, a French philosopher and writer who would become one of her closest friends.

In 1749, Émilie published a scientific work entitled Institutions de physique. The book was well-received by the scientific community and established her as a respected thinker.
In 1751, Émilie began working on a translation of Newton’s Principia Mathematica. The project took her four years to complete, but the result was an excellent translation that is still used today.
Émilie du Châtelet died in 1749, at the age of 42. She is remembered as a brilliant scientist and thinker who made important contributions to our understanding of the natural world.
