Elisabeth Shue was born on October 6, 1963, in Wilmington, Delaware. Her parents, Anne Harms and James William Shue, were both attorneys. She has three brothers: Andrew, William, and John. Shue was raised in South Orange, New Jersey, and attended Columbia High School. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1986 with a degree in political science.

Shue began her acting career in 1984 with a small role in The Karate Kid. She went on to star in a number of films throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including Adventures in Babysitting (1987), Cocktail (1988), Back to the Future Part II (1989), Back to the Future Part III (1990), Leaving Las Vegas (1995), and The Saint (1997). In 1999, Shue starred in the Academy Award-winning film The Hurt Locker.

Shue has been married to director Davis Guggenheim since 1994. They have three children: Miles, Stella, and Agnes. Shue currently resides in Los Angeles, California.
