Edward Burns is an American actor, film producer, writer and director. He is best known for his work on the television series “The Brothers McMullen” and the films “Saving Private Ryan” and “The Holiday”.
Born in New York City, Burns was raised on Long Island. His mother was a schoolteacher and his father was a police sergeant. He has three sisters.
Burns graduated from Hofstra University in 1987 with a degree in English. He began his career working as a production assistant on the films “The Godfather: Part III” and “Leon”. He also appeared in a number of small roles in films and television shows.
In 1995, Burns wrote, directed and starred in the film “The Brothers McMullen”. The film was a critical and commercial success. It won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
Burns has since directed and starred in a number of films, including “Sidewalks of New York”, “She’s the One”, “Purple Violets” and “The Fitzgerald Family Christmas”. He also appeared in the films “Saving Private Ryan”, “27 Dresses” and “The Holiday”.
Burns has been married to supermodel Christy Turlington since 2003. The couple have two children.
