Eddie Carroll (1922-2010) was an American actor and comedian, best known for his role as the voice of Jiminy Cricket in the 1940 Disney film “Pinocchio.”

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, on August 13, 1922, Carroll was the youngest of three children. His father, Edward J. Carroll, was a lawyer, and his mother, Carrie (née Dolan), was a homemaker. He has two older sisters, Mary and Margaret.

Carroll’s interest in acting began at an early age. When he was just eight years old, he appeared in his first play, “The Mikado,” at Omaha’s Orpheum Theater. He later recalled that he “got the acting bug” after that experience.

After graduating from high school, Carroll attended Creighton University in Omaha on a drama scholarship. He later transferred to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City.

Carroll’s career began in the 1940s with roles on Broadway and in regional theater. He made his film debut in the 1944 musical “Up in Arms,” starring Danny Kaye.

In 1940, Carroll was cast as the voice of Jiminy Cricket in the Disney film “Pinocchio.” It was a role that would define his career; he would go on to reprise the role in several subsequent films and TV series over the next few decades.

In addition to his work as a voice actor, Carroll also had a successful career as a character actor on stage and screen. He appeared in such films as “The Honeymoon Killers” (1970), “The Rescuers” (1977), and “The Fox and the Hound” (1981).

Carroll also had a long association with The Walt Disney Company, appearing in numerous Disney films and TV shows over the years. He retired from acting in 2009.

Carroll died at his home in Los Angeles on May 31, 2010, at the age of 87.

At the time of his death, Carroll’s net worth was estimated to be $5 million.
