David McCallum was born on September 19, 1933, in Glasgow, Scotland. His parents, Dorothy Dorman and David McCallum Sr., were both musicians. His father played the oboe in the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and his mother was a singer. McCallum has two older sisters, Isobel and Sheila.
McCallum’s family moved to London when he was three years old. He was educated at University College School and the Royal Academy of Music. McCallum’s father died when he was 12, and his mother remarried two years later.
McCallum began his acting career in 1951 with a small role in the film “The Man in the White Suit.” He went on to have roles in several British films and television shows. In 1956, McCallum appeared in an episode of the television series “The Adventures of Robin Hood.”
In 1964, McCallum was cast as Illya Kuryakin, a Russian secret agent, in the television series “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” The show was a hit, and McCallum became a star. He appeared in the show for four seasons.
In the 1970s, McCallum appeared in several films, including “The Great Escape” (1963), “Battle of Britain” (1969), and “The Spy Who Loved Me” (1977). He also had a recurring role on the television series “Space: 1999” (1975-1977).
In the 1980s, McCallum starred in the television series “Colditz” (1982-1985) and “Dynasty” (1985-1986). He also appeared in the films “The Hunt for Red October” (1990) and “The Man from Snowy River” (1992).
In recent years, McCallum has had roles in the television series “NCIS” (2003-present) and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (2004-present).
McCallum has been married three times. His first wife was actress Jill Ireland. They were married from 1957 until her death in 1990. McCallum has three children with Ireland: Paul, Jason, and Valentine.
