David Johansen is an American musician, singer and songwriter. He is best known as the lead singer of the New York Dolls. He is also known for his work as a solo artist, and as a member of the band Buster Poindexter and His Banshees of Blue.
Johansen was born in Staten Island, New York, on January 9, 1950. His father was a doctor, and his mother was a nurse. He has two older sisters. Johansen’s early education took place at the prestigious P.S. 41 in Greenwich Village.
Johansen began his musical career in the late 1960s, playing in a number of bands including the New York Dolls. The Dolls were a highly influential proto-punk band, and their stage act was a major influence on the punk and glam rock movements of the 1970s. The band’s debut album, New York Dolls, was released in 1973 to critical acclaim.
The Dolls disbanded in 1977, and Johansen embarked on a solo career. His first solo album, David Johansen, was released in 1978. The album was a commercial and critical success, and spawned the hit single “Hot Hot Hot.”
In 1980, Johansen formed the band Buster Poindexter and His Banshees of Blue. The band had a hit with their cover of “Hot Hot Hot,” which became an anthem of sorts for the 1980s. The band also had success with their cover of “Me and Mrs. Jones.”
Johansen has continued to release solo albums throughout his career, including 1990’s In Style, 2001’s David Johansen and the Harry Smiths, and 2010’s David Johansen Group. He has also appeared on numerous television shows and movies, including an episode of The Simpsons.
Johansen has been married three times. His first marriage was to Vera Ramone King, the ex-wife of Ramones frontman Joey Ramone. The couple had one child together, a daughter named Vera Johansen. Johansen’s second marriage was to model Catherine Oxenberg. The couple had two daughters together, Alexandra and Olivia. Johansen’s third marriage is to model Jessica Lee Morgan. The couple has one son together, David Jr.
Johansen has an estimated net worth of $5 million. He has earned his wealth through his successful musical career.

Every singer who's worth his salt is an actor. You play different characters in different songs. Sometimes you're a romantic lead, sometimes you're this madcap party barbarian. You play all these roles, running through every aspect of emotion.
