She attended the High School of Performing Arts in New York City. After graduation, she studied acting at the Stella Adler Conservatory of Acting.
Spencer’s first acting role was in the television series “The Cosby Show” (1984). She also appeared in the films “Lean on Me” (1989), “School Ties” (1992), and “The Mighty Ducks” (1992). In 1995, she starred in the television series “South Central”.
