Daniel Gillies is a Canadian-born actor and director, best known for his role as Elijah Mikaelson on The CW’s hit supernatural drama, The Originals.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on March 14, 1976, Gillies was raised in New Zealand from the age of two. His parents, who were both teachers, instilled in him a love of learning at an early age.

Gillies began his acting career in his teens, appearing in a number of local theater productions. He made his television debut in 1995, guest-starring on the New Zealand soap opera Shortland Street.

In 2000, Gillies made the move to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of becoming a Hollywood actor. He landed his first major role in the 2002 film Spider-Man 2, playing John Jameson, the son of Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson (played by J.K. Simmons).

Gillies’ breakout role came in 2013, when he was cast as Elijah Mikaelson on The Originals. He has since appeared in over 100 episodes of the show, which is currently in its fifth and final season.

In addition to his work on The Originals, Gillies has also directed two episodes of the show. He made his directorial debut with the episode “The Battle of New Orleans”, which aired in 2016.
