Daisy Bates was born in Huttig, Arkansas on November 11, 1914. Her parents were sharecroppers who struggled to make ends meet. Daisy was the youngest of eight children and did not receive much formal education. Despite this, she was a voracious reader and developed a love for learning.

In 1932, Bates began working as a maid in Little Rock, Arkansas. It was there that she first became involved in the civil rights movement. She joined the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and began working to register black voters.

In 1955, Bates played a pivotal role in the desegregation of Little Rock’s public schools. She served as a mentor and protector to the nine African-American students who integrated Central High School.

Bates continued her work for civil rights until her death in 1999. She was inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 2001.
