Hoffmann was born in Heidelberg, Germany, on December 6, 1942. His parents were both academics; his father was a professor of Romance languages and his mother was a librarian. Hoffmann has two older sisters.

He attended the Heidelberg Gymnasium, a prestigious secondary school, and then went on to study electrical engineering at the University of Karlsruhe. He graduated in 1966.

After graduation, Hoffmann began his career as a software engineer at IBM in Germany. He worked there for four years before moving to the United States to work for the company in New York City.

In 1972, Hoffmann returned to Germany to co-found SAP SE, a software company that provides enterprise software and services to businesses of all sizes. SAP is now one of the world’s largest software companies, with over 100,000 employees in 130 countries.

Hoffmann served as SAP’s CEO from 1988 to 1998, and then as Chairman of the Board from 1998 to 2003. He retired from the company in 2006.

Today, Hoffmann is a venture capitalist and philanthropist. He is a member of the supervisory board of the German software company TeamViewer.

Hoffmann has an estimated net worth of $3.4 billion. He is married and has three children.
