Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Kane was the youngest of four children. Her father was a jeweler and her mother was a homemaker. Kane began acting at the age of seven, appearing in school plays. She made her professional debut in an off-Broadway production of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

Kane’s breakout role came in the 1975 film Hester Street, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She subsequently appeared in a number of films, including The Godfather Part II, Annie Hall, and The World According to Garp.

In the early 1980s, Kane starred in the television series Taxi as Zena Sherman, the ex-wife of Tony Danza’s character. She also had a recurring role on Cheers as Diane Chambers’ estranged sister Lilith Sternin.

In 1992, Kane began appearing as Morticia Addams in the television series The Addams Family. She continued to play the role for two years, after which the series was cancelled.

Kane has been married twice, first to actor Gabriel Byrne and then to producer Jon Jost. She has two children from her first marriage, and one from her second.

Kane has a net worth of $8 million.

1I don't put together cars, I put together people. It makes me happy to construct these people, to build another world. I feel happy and free and very consumed. [her reasons why she doesn't want to quit acting for another job]
2Jack prefers the actresses with whom he works to be on the short side. I wasn't tall, so I was immediately in. The reason for this is that he is no more than five foot seven or so himself. When he has no other choice but to play opposite a lanky actress, he will wear elevator shoes. [on working with Jack Nicholson]
