Brian McKnight is an American singer, songwriter, arranger, producer, and musician. He is a multi-instrumentalist who plays piano, guitar, bass guitar, percussion, and drums. He is also a vocalist and has a four-octave range. He has released sixteen studio albums to date. McKnight is perhaps best known for his R&B ballads and love songs. He has had several hit singles throughout his career, including “One Last Cry”, “Anytime”, “The Way Love Goes”, and “Back at One”.
McKnight was born on October 5, 1969 in Buffalo, New York. His parents are Claude McKnight III, a gospel singer, and Marilyn McKnight, a jazz singer. He has three brothers: Claude McKnight IV, Jason McKnight, and Teddy McKnight. McKnight’s father was the lead singer of the Buffalo-based R&B group The 5th Dimension. His mother was a backup singer for the group. McKnight’s grandfather was a minister and his grandmother was a gospel singer.
McKnight was exposed to music at an early age. He began playing the piano when he was five years old. He also took up the drums when he was in high school. He attended Sweet Home High School in Amherst, New York. After graduating from high school, he attended the State University of New York at Fredonia where he studied music education.
McKnight’s career began in 1992 when he signed with Mercury Records. He released his self-titled debut album in 1993. The album was not a commercial success. However, it did spawn the hit single “One Last Cry”, which peaked at number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In 1996, McKnight released his second album, I Remember You. The album was more successful than his debut album, reaching number eleven on the Billboard 200 chart. The album’s lead single, “On the Floor”, peaked at number twenty-five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
McKnight’s third album, Anytime, was released in 1997. The album was another commercial success, reaching number seven on the Billboard 200 chart. The album’s lead single, “Anytime”, peaked at number eleven on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In 1999, McKnight released his fourth album, Back at One. The album was another commercial success, reaching number two on the Billboard 200 chart. The album’s lead single, “Back at One”, peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
McKnight has released several other albums since 1999, including Superhero (2001), U Turn (2003), Gemini (2005), Ten (2006), Evolution of a Man (2009), More Than Words (2011), Better (2013), and More Than Words Xmas (2014).
McKnight has sold over twenty-five million records worldwide. He has won numerous awards throughout his career, including three Grammy Awards and nine Soul Train Music Awards.
