Barbara Boxer is an American politician who served as a United States Senator from California from 1993 to 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, she previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1983 to 1993. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Boxer graduated from Brooklyn College and then worked as a stockbroker before moving to California. She first ran for office in 1976, when she was elected to the Marin County Board of Supervisors. She then served in the California State Assembly from 1982 to 1983, before being elected to the House of Representatives.

In 1992, she ran for the U.S. Senate, defeating incumbent Republican Pete Wilson. She was reelected in 1998 and 2004, and served as the Chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works from 2001 to 2003 and again from 2007 to 2009. She was also the Chairwoman of the Senate Select Committee on Ethics from 2001 to 2003.

A moderate Democrat, Boxer was known for her support of environmental causes and gun control. She also authored or co-authored several bills, including the Violence Against Women Act of 1994 and the Affordable Care Act of 2010. She retired from the Senate in 2017 and was succeeded by Kamala Harris.

Early Life

Barbara Boxer was born on November 11, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Jewish immigrants Sophie (née Wolofsky) and Ira Boxer. She attended public schools in Brooklyn, graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1958. She then enrolled at Brooklyn College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics in 1962.

After college, Boxer worked as a stockbroker for three years. She then moved to Marin County, California, where she worked as a journalist for a local newspaper.

Career

Boxer first ran for office in 1976, when she was elected to the Marin County Board of Supervisors. She then served in the California State Assembly from 1982 to 1983, before being elected to the House of Representatives.

In 1992, she ran for the U.S. Senate, defeating incumbent Republican Pete Wilson. She was reelected in 1998 and 2004, and served as the Chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works from 2001 to 2003 and again from 2007 to 2009. She was also the Chairwoman of the Senate Select Committee on Ethics from 2001 to 2003.
