August Schellenberg, Canadian actor (born Aug. 15, 1936, Montreal, Que.—died Aug. 15, 2013, North Vancouver, B.C.), was a versatile performer who appeared in more than 100 film and television roles but was perhaps best known for his work in the Oscar-winning film Dances with Wolves (1990), in which he played the Lakota medicine man Kicking Bird. Schellenberg began his career in the 1960s with the National Arts Centre’s English-language company in Ottawa and went on to perform with the Stratford (Ontario) Festival and the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont. He made his screen debut in an episode of the CBC series Wojeck (1966) and appeared in such films as Black Robe (1991), Free Willy (1993), and The New World (2005). Schellenberg was honoured with a Native American Music Award for his work on the soundtrack of Smoke Signals (1998).
