Anne Holt (born October 23, 1958) is a Norwegian writer of crime fiction and a former lawyer. She is best known for her series of books featuring police investigator Hanne Wilhelmsen.

Born in Oslo, Holt grew up in the city’s affluent West End. Her father was a successful businessman and her mother was a homemaker. She has two older sisters. Holt was an excellent student and was accepted to the prestigious Oslo Cathedral School. She went on to study law at the University of Oslo, graduating with honors in 1983.

After a brief stint working as a lawyer, Holt decided to pursue a career in writing. Her first book, Blind Gulls, was published in 1992 and was an instant success. It was followed by a sequel, Death of a Nightingale, in 1993. The third book in the series, The Lion’s Mouth, was published in 1994 and won the Norwegian Booksellers’ Prize.

Holt’s Hanne Wilhelmsen series has been translated into more than 20 languages and has sold millions of copies worldwide. The series has been adapted for television, and a film adaptation of The Lion’s Mouth is currently in development.

Holt is one of Norway’s best-selling authors and is considered one of the country’s most successful crime writers. She has won numerous awards, including the Norwegian Booksellers’ Prize, the Glass Key Award, and the Golden Dagger Award.

Holt is married to businessman Erik Skjoldbjærg and has two daughters. The family divides their time between Oslo and their summer home on the island of Tromøy.
