As president of the Oxford University Dramatic Society, he directed such plays as "Peer Gynt" and "King John". Richardson graduated from Oxford in 1952 and joined the BBC as a producer. In 1956 he became associate director of the English Stage Company. The first play he produced was John Osborne's "Look Back in Anger". This started a fruitful collaborative cycle which included work on several films. Richardson formed his own production company, Woodfall Films, in 1958, turning out high-quality features, such as The Entertainer (1960), A Taste of Honey (1961) and Tom Jones (1963).
Tony Richardson was an English film director. He was born in Shipley, Yorkshire, on 5 June 1928, the son of Elsie Evans and Clarence Albert Richardson, a chemist. His family was middle class and Methodist. He was educated at Bradford Grammar School and at Magdalene College, Cambridge. He directed his first play, A Day by the Sea, in 1953. He joined the Royal Court Theatre as a director in 1956. His first film, Look Back in Anger, was released in 1959. It was based on the play by John Osborne. It starred Richard Burton and Claire Bloom. It was a critical and commercial success.
Richardson’s next film, The Entertainer, was also a success. It starred Laurence Olivier and Joan Plowright. His next film, A Taste of Honey, was a critical success. It starred Rita Tushingham and Murray Melvin. It won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
In 1963, Richardson directed The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. It starred Tom Courtenay and Michael Redgrave. It was a critical and commercial success. Richardson’s next film, Tom Jones, was a critical and commercial success. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture. It starred Albert Finney and Susannah York.
In 1968, Richardson directed The Charge of the Light Brigade. It starred Trevor Howard and Vanessa Redgrave. It was a critical and commercial failure. Richardson’s next film, Ned Kelly, was a critical and commercial failure. It starred Mick Jagger and Dennis Hopper.
