Timothy Busfield is an American actor, director, and producer. He is best known for his roles in the television series thirtysomething, The West Wing, and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.

Busfield was born in Lansing, Michigan, the son of Jean (née Bowden), a high school English teacher, and Roger Busfield, a university professor. He has two brothers, Mark and Steve. His early education was at East Lansing High School, where he was active in drama and sports. He earned a bachelor’s degree in theater from Michigan State University in 1976.

Busfield’s acting career began in the late 1970s with guest appearances on television shows such as B.J. and the Bear and Lou Grant. His first film role was in the 1981 movie Cutter’s Way. In 1983, he played the role of Elliot Weston in the television series thirtysomething. The role earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 1987.

In 1999, Busfield starred in the short-lived television series Sports Night. The show was cancelled after two seasons. In 2006, he starred in the NBC drama Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. The show was cancelled after one season.

Busfield has directed episodes of thirtysomething, Sports Night, Felicity, Without a Trace, and Medium. He made his feature film directorial debut with the 2006 film Field of Lost Shoes.

Busfield is married to Jennifer Merwin. They have three children: Sam, Daisy, and Will.
