Ted McGinley was born in Santa Monica, California, on May 30, 1958. His parents were Peggy (née McNulty), a homemaker, and John McGinley, an insurance broker. He has two older sisters, Judy and Barbara. McGinley was raised in a strict Catholic household and attended Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles. He played football and baseball in high school and was offered a baseball scholarship to the University of Southern California, but declined in order to pursue an acting career.
McGinley’s first acting role was in an episode of the television series Happy Days. He subsequently appeared in episodes of Laverne & Shirley, M*A*S*H, and The Love Boat. In 1981, he had a small role in the film The Cannonball Run. McGinley’s breakout role came in 1982 when he played Jefferson D’Arcy on the television series Married… with Children. He continued to appear on the show until 1997.
In 1984, McGinley appeared in the film Revenge of the Nerds. He subsequently appeared in films such as Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986), The Wonder Years (1988), Wayne’s World (1992), and Major League: Back to the Minors (1998). McGinley has also appeared in several television movies and miniseries, including The Stand (1994), From the Earth to the Moon (1998), and 10.5 (2004).
McGinley has been married to Megan Murphy since 1984. They have two children: Molly and Patrick. McGinley is a supporter of the Republican Party and has donated to the campaigns of Mitt Romney and John McCain.
