FactAs the senior U.S. Senator from Massachusetts since 1962. He was first elected to the Senate on 6 November 1962 after a special election was held.

Ted Kennedy was born in Boston, Massachusetts on February 22, 1932. He was the youngest of nine children born to Rose and Joseph P. Kennedy. His siblings included John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Ethel Kennedy. Ted Kennedy attended private schools in Massachusetts and New York before enrolling at Harvard University in 1950. He graduated from Harvard in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in government.

Ted Kennedy began his political career in 1962, when he was elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts. He was reelected seven times, serving in the Senate for nearly 47 years. During his time in the Senate, Ted Kennedy was a champion of liberal causes, including civil rights, health care reform, and environmental protection. He also played a key role in the passage of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, which helped bring millions of immigrants to the United States.

Ted Kennedy’s personal life was marked by tragedy. In 1969, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law were killed in a plane crash. In 1973, Ted Kennedy was involved in a car accident on Chappaquiddick Island that resulted in the death of his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne. The incident haunted Ted Kennedy for the rest of his life, and he was never able to fully escape the shadow it cast over his career.

In 1980, Ted Kennedy made a bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, but he lost to incumbent Jimmy Carter. Four years later, he ran again and lost to Walter Mondale. In the 1988 presidential election, Ted Kennedy endorsed Democratic candidate Michael Dukakis, but Dukakis lost to Republican George H. W. Bush.

Ted Kennedy continued to serve in the Senate until his death from brain cancer on August 25, 2009. He was survived by his wife, Victoria Reggie Kennedy, and their three children.

2There was no imminent threat. This was made up in Texas, announced in January to the Republican leadership that war was going to take place and was going to be good politically. This whole thing was a fraud.
3Thus, the controversy about the Moral Majority arises not only from its views, but from its name - which, in the minds of many, seems to imply that only one set of public policies is moral and only one majority can possibly be right.

6It's now clear that from the very moment President Bush took office, Iraq was his highest priority as unfinished business from the first Bush Administration. His agenda was clear: find a rationale to get rid of Saddam.

16For all my years in public life, I have believed that America must sail toward the shores of liberty and justice for all. There is no end to that journey, only the next great voyage. We know the future will outlast all of us, but I believe that all of us will live on in the future we make.
