Stephen Jackson is an American former professional basketball player who played for 14 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Jackson was born in Port Arthur, Texas, and raised in Oak Hill, Virginia. He played college basketball for Butler University and was drafted 42nd overall by the New Jersey Nets in the 1997 NBA draft. Jackson began his NBA career with the Nets and later played for the New York Knicks, the Golden State Warriors, the Indiana Pacers, the San Antonio Spurs, the Charlotte Bobcats, and the Los Angeles Clippers. He won an NBA championship with the Spurs in 2003.
Jackson was known for his versatility and ability to play both small forward and shooting guard. He was a two-time NBA All-Star and won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award in 2004. He also had a successful rap career, releasing three albums from 2010 to 2016. Jackson retired from basketball in 2015.
Early Life
Jackson was born on April 5, 1978, in Port Arthur, Texas, to Shirley Jackson and Robert Jackson. He has three brothers and two sisters. His father was a truck driver and his mother was a homemaker.
Jackson was raised in Oak Hill, Virginia. He attended John Marshall High School, where he played basketball and football. Jackson originally wanted to play football in college, but he decided to focus on basketball after suffering a serious knee injury in his senior year of high school.
College career
Jackson played college basketball for Butler University from 1996 to 1997. He was named Midwestern Collegiate Conference (MCC) Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore. Jackson helped lead Butler to an MCC regular season championship and an appearance in the 1997 NCAA Tournament.
Professional career
Jackson was drafted 42nd overall by the New Jersey Nets in the 1997 NBA draft. He began his NBA career with the Nets, averaging 5.1 points per game in his rookie season. Jackson was traded to the New York Knicks midway through his second season. He averaged 8.8 points per game for the Knicks in 1998-99.

Jackson was traded to the Golden State Warriors prior to the 1999-2000 season. He became a key player for the Warriors, averaging 15.4 points per game in his first season with the team. Jackson helped lead the Warriors to the playoffs in 2001-02 and 2002-03. He was named NBA Sixth Man of the Year in 2002-03.
The Warriors traded Jackson to the Indiana Pacers in 2003. He averaged a career-high 20.1 points per game for the Pacers in 2003-04. Jackson helped lead Indiana to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2004. He was traded to the San Antonio Spurs in 2005.
Jackson won an NBA championship with the Spurs in 2003. He averaged 10.1 points per game during the playoffs. Jackson also won a second NBA title with San Antonio in 2005. He averaged 9.4 points per game during the playoffs that year.
Jackson was traded to the Charlotte Bobcats in 2011. He averaged 10.9 points per game for Charlotte in 2011-12. Jackson was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in 2013. He averaged 6.2 points per game for the Clippers during the 2013-14 season.
