Spike Milligan was an Irish comedian, writer, musician, poet, and actor. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential comedians of the 20th century.

Milligan was born in Ahmednagar, India, on 16 April 1918, the son of an Irish father, Captain Leo Alphonso Milligan, and an English mother, Florence Mary Winifred Kettleband. His father was an officer in the British Indian Army and his mother was a nurse. He had three sisters: Maeve, Sheila, and Vera.

Milligan was educated at St Patrick’s School in Poona, India, and at King Edward VII School in England. He began his career as a comedian in 1939, when he joined the British Army. He served in the Royal Artillery during World War II and was invalided out in 1944.

After the war, Milligan worked as a writer and performer on radio and television. He is best known for his work with Peter Sellers and Harry Secombe in The Goon Show, a surrealist radio comedy series that ran from 1951 to 1960. Milligan wrote most of the Goon Show scripts and also played a number of characters, including Eccles and Major Bloodnok.

Milligan’s other radio work includes The Idiot Weekly, Price 2d (1956-57), It’s All In The Game (1958-59), and Q5 (1979-80). He also wrote and starred in several radio series for the BBC, including The Spike Milligan Show (1967-68), Milligan’s Room (1969-70), and Son of Oblomov (1975-76).

On television, Milligan appeared in The Idiot Weekly (1956-57), It’s All In The Game (1958-59), Q5 (1979-80), and as a guest on numerous variety and chat shows.

Milligan’s film credits include The Italian Job (1969), Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall (1972), and The Three Musketeers (1973).

Milligan wrote more than 50 books, including his autobiography, Puckoon (1963), and the posthumously published Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall (1972). He also wrote poetry, plays, and songs.

Milligan was married three times: first to June Marlowe with whom he had two daughters; secondly to Patricia O’Grady with whom he had a son; and thirdly to Shelagh Sinclair with whom he had two sons. He died on 27 February 2002 at the age of 83.

1[on Chris Evans] He is without any talent. All he can do is small talk. The smartest thing I ever heard him say was "good morning". The moment I saw him talking, I thought "you're an idiot". The best I can wish him is an early death.
2[on Peter Sellers] I think his mother had gained such an incredible influence over him that he virtually abdicated his own rights to any individual personality. Finally, he had to invade other bodies to register at all. He had to inhabit, he was like a ghoul, he had to feast off somebody else! But he did it so well, it became an art. He was not a genius, Sellers, he was a freak.
3[on Rik Mayall and his kind of comedy] Rik Mayall is putrid. Absolutely vile. He thinks nose-picking is funny and farting and all that. He is the arsehole of British comedy.
4A sure cure for seasickness is to sit under a tree.
5[on his 62nd birthday] Any man can be 62, but it takes a bus to be 62A.
6The fondest memory I have is not really of the Goons. It's of a girl called Julia with enormous breasts.
7I don't mind dying - I just don't want to be there.
8World peace could be a possibility...if it weren't for all those damned foreigners!
9Money couldn't buy friends but you got a better class of enemy. - Puckoon 1963
