Sidney Spencer is an American former professional basketball player. She played in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) for the Houston Comets and the Seattle Storm.
Spencer was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on September 16, 1983. She is the daughter of Sidney and Shirley Spencer. She has two sisters, Shondra and Sheryl. Spencer attended John Carroll Catholic High School in Birmingham, where she played basketball and volleyball. She was named a WBCA All-American and was a McDonald’s All-American in 2001.
Spencer played college basketball at the University of Tennessee from 2001 to 2005. She was a three-time All-SEC selection and was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2004. She helped lead the Lady Volunteers to four straight SEC championships and four consecutive trips to the NCAA Final Four.
Spencer was drafted by the Houston Comets with the ninth overall pick in the 2005 WNBA Draft. She played four seasons for the Comets, winning two WNBA championships in 2006 and 2007. In 2009, she was traded to the Seattle Storm. She played four seasons for the Storm, winning a third WNBA championship in 2010. Spencer retired from the WNBA after the 2013 season.
Spencer was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
