Shakin’ Stevens (born Michael Barratt, 4 March 1948) is a Welsh singer and songwriter. He was the most successful singles artist of the 1980s in the United Kingdom. His recording and performing career began in the late 1960s, although it was not until 1980 that his commercial success began. Stevens had several hits in the United Kingdom, his best known being “This Ole House”, “Green Door”, “Oh Julie”, and “Merry Christmas Everyone”. He has also released 19 studio albums, and earned his first Grammy Award nomination for his 1989 album Shaky.
Born in Cardiff, Wales, Stevens was raised in a working-class family. His father worked as a labourer and his mother was a factory worker. Stevens began performing in clubs and pubs in the late 1960s. He released his first single, “Hot Dog”, in 1970, but it was not a commercial success. His next single, “You Drive Me Crazy”, was a hit in the United Kingdom, reaching number nine on the UK Singles Chart. Stevens’ career took off in the 1980s with a string of hits, including “This Ole House”, “Green Door”, “Oh Julie”, and “Merry Christmas Everyone”. He has also released 19 studio albums, and earned his first Grammy Award nomination for his 1989 album Shaky.
Stevens has been married twice. His first marriage, to Mandy Smith, lasted from 1983 to 1987. His second marriage, to former Miss Wales Sarah-Jane Fenton, lasted from 2013 to 2016. He has three children from his first marriage.
Stevens is 1.73 metres (5 feet 8 inches) tall and has blue eyes.
Shaky is a lifelong Cardiff City supporter; in the 1984 video for Merry Christmas Everyone the snowman wears a Bluebirds supporters scarf, the video also features his daughter, son and actor Sarah j Price amongst the young children they can also be seen wearing Cardiff City FC scarves while his son wears a Cardiff City bobble hat.
