Sergei Prokofiev was a Russian composer, pianist and conductor who mastered numerous musical genres and is regarded as one of the major composers of the 20th century.

Prokofiev was born on April 23, 1891, in Sontsovka, Russia, to Feodor Prokofiev and Maria Prokofiev. His father was a landowner and grain merchant, while his mother was a talented amateur pianist. Sergei had two younger brothers, Gabriel and Oleg.

Prokofiev began piano lessons at age five with his mother. He later studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory with renowned teachers such as Nikolai Zverev, Anatoly Lyadov and Vasily Safonov.

Prokofiev’s first big success came with his opera The Love for Three Oranges, which premiered in Chicago in 1921. He also wrote successful works for the ballet, including Romeo and Juliet and Cinderella.

During World War II, Prokofiev lived in the Soviet Union, where he composed several patriotic works celebrating the Soviet Union and its leader, Joseph Stalin. However, he later fell out of favor with the Soviet authorities and his music was banned.

Prokofiev died on March 5, 1953, in Moscow, Russia. He was survived by his wife, Mira Mendelson, and their two sons, Sviatoslav and Oleg.

Prokofiev was a prolific composer, writing over 100 works during his lifetime. His works include symphonies, concerti, operas, ballets, and film scores. He is best known for his ballet Romeo and Juliet and his opera The Love for Three Oranges.
