Scotty Moore was born in Gadsden, Tennessee, on December 15, 1931. He was the only child of parents who were both musicians. His father, Sam, played the fiddle and his mother, Elsie, played the piano. Scotty began playing the guitar at the age of eight. He was influenced by the music of Hank Williams, Merle Travis, and Django Reinhardt. He also developed a love for country and western swing music.
Scotty’s first professional gig was with the Dixie Ramblers, a country music band. He soon began playing with other bands in the Memphis area. In 1954, he met Elvis Presley, who was then a rising star in the music industry. Scotty became Elvis’ lead guitarist and played on all of his hit records. He also toured with Elvis and appeared in several of his movies.
Scotty’s guitar playing style was unique and influenced many other guitarists. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. In 2000, he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Scotty Moore died on June 28, 2016, at the age of 84.
