Born Sara Rebecca Abeles in Santa Monica, California, Gilbert is the daughter of Barbara Cowan and Harold Abeles. Her mother is the daughter of The Honeymooners creator Harry Crane and his wife, actress Joyce Bulifant. Her two older siblings on her mother’s side, Melissa Gilbert and Jonathan Gilbert, were stars of Little House on the Prairie. Sara took her mother’s maiden name as her stage name when she began acting professionally.
Gilbert began her acting career at the age of thirteen when she landed the role of Darlene Conner, the sarcastic middle child, on Roseanne. The show was an instant hit, and Gilbert’s performance earned her critical acclaim as well as two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. She remained with the show until its cancellation in 1997.
In the years following Roseanne, Gilbert appeared in a number of films and television shows, including Poison Ivy (1992), High Fidelity (2000), Riding in Cars with Boys (2001), ER (2002), The Class (2006), and Grey’s Anatomy (2007). She also had a recurring role as Leslie Winkle on the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory from 2007 to 2010.
In 2010, Gilbert began co-hosting and executive producing The Talk, a daytime talk show that features a panel of female hosts discussing various topics. The show has been a ratings success, and Gilbert has received praise for her performance as a host.
Gilbert came out as a lesbian in 2010 and began dating television producer Allison Adler. The couple had two children together before breaking up in 2011. Gilbert is currently in a relationship with songwriter Linda Perry.
Gilbert has a net worth of $35 million. She earns a salary of $5 million per year from her work on The Talk. In addition to her acting and hosting work, Gilbert also earns income from her work as a producer and director.
