Thomas began his career with Manchester United, making his first team debut in 2003. He spent time on loan at Preston North End and Royal Antwerp before joining Preston on a permanent basis in 2006. He has since made over 200 appearances for the club, scoring 27 goals.
Thomas has represented England at U16, U17 and U21 level. He was a member of the England U21 team that won the 2007 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
