Rube Goldberg was an American cartoonist, sculptor, author, engineer, and inventor. He is best known for his zany invention cartoons, which often depicted complex devices that performed simple tasks in indirect, convoluted ways.
Born in San Francisco in 1883, Goldberg was the son of Jewish immigrants from Romania. He began his career as a newspaper reporter and cartoonist. His cartoons were first published in national magazines in 1907, and he soon became one of the most popular cartoonists in the country.
Goldberg’s invention cartoons were often inspired by his own experience as an engineer. He holds a degree in engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. In addition to his engineering knowledge, Goldberg was also an expert in the field of physics. This allowed him to create detailed and realistic drawings of his inventions.
Goldberg’s most famous invention cartoon, “The Inventions of Professor Lucifer Gorgonzola Butts,” was first published in 1913. It featured a complex machine that performed a simple task in a very indirect and convoluted way. The cartoon was so popular that it spawned a series of sequels and imitations.
Goldberg continued to create invention cartoons until his death in 1970. His work remains popular and has been featured in several books and exhibitions.
