Early Life

Roy Raymond was born in San Francisco, California, on April 15, 1953. His parents were of average means, and he has two older sisters. He was educated in the public school system and was an average student.

He developed an early interest in fashion and design, and after graduating from high school, he attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. He later transferred to the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied English literature.

Career

After college, Raymond began working in the advertising industry. He was not satisfied with his career progress, however, and began to look for other opportunities.

In 1977, he had the idea to create a lingerie store that would cater to men’s needs and desires. He opened the first Victoria’s Secret store in San Francisco in 1977. The store was an instant success, and Raymond quickly began expanding the brand.

Victoria’s Secret became a household name, and Raymond became a millionaire. He sold the company to Limited Brands in 1982 for $4 million. He remained with the company as CEO until his retirement in 2007.
