His parents divorced when he was young, and he was raised by his mother in Oakland, California. Dunbar attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied English and theatre. He began his acting career in the early 1990s, appearing in various television shows and movies. He rose to prominence in the 2000s with his roles in the television series Soul Food and Prison Break. In recent years, Dunbar has starred in the television series The Mentalist and Rosewood. He has also appeared in the movies Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds and The Best Man Holiday.
