Ricardo Arjona is a Guatemalan singer-songwriter and former basketball player. Arjona is one of the most successful Latin American artists of all time, having sold more than 25 million albums worldwide. He is often referred to as El Animal Nocturno (The Nighttime Animal) due to his penchant for writing and performing songs with racy, sexual lyrics.
Arjona was born on January 19, 1964, in Jocotenango, Guatemala. His father, Ricardo Arjona Mosquera, was a lawyer and his mother, Mimi Morales de Arjona, was a housewife. He has four siblings: two brothers and two sisters. Arjona was raised in a middle-class home and received a Catholic education.
Arjona began playing basketball at a young age and was even offered a spot on the Guatemalan national team. However, he decided to pursue a career in music instead. He began playing guitar and writing songs as a teenager.
Arjona’s professional music career began in the early 1980s. He released his first album, Déjame Decir Que Te Amo, in 1984. The album was not a success and Arjona was dropped by his record label. Undeterred, he released his second album, Jesús, El Alegre Hombre Bomba, in 1986. The album was a hit in Guatemala and helped to launch Arjona’s career.
Arjona has released 13 studio albums over the course of his career. His most successful album to date is Historias (1998), which has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide. Arjona has won numerous awards, including five Latin Grammy Awards and two Grammy Awards.
