Ralph Lauren was born Ralph Lifshitz on October 14, 1939, in The Bronx, New York, the son of Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants, Frieda (née Belinkoff) and Frank Lifshitz, a house painter. Ralph Lauren has an older brother named Jerry.

Lauren attended day school followed by MTA (now known as the High School of Music & Art) in New York City. He then enrolled in Baruch College, where he studied business, although he dropped out after two years. From 1962 to 1964, Lauren served in the United States Army and was assigned to the Fort Knox base in Kentucky.

After his discharge from the army, Lauren moved back to New York City and began working as a sales assistant for Brooks Brothers. He joined tie manufacturer Beau Brummell in 1967 and became head of design in 1969. In 1971, he launched his own line of wide ties under the Polo label.

In 1972, Lauren opened a store on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, which helped him gain a wider audience for his clothing line. He expanded his line to include shirts, jackets, and trousers. In 1977, he launched a line of women’s clothing under the Polo label.

In 1984, Lauren released his first fragrance, Polo for Men. The following year, he released Polo Sport for men and women. These two fragrances helped him establish himself as a major player in the fashion industry.

In 1992, Lauren released his first book, Ralph Lauren: The Man, The Vision, The Style. The book chronicles his life and career up to that point.

In 1999, Lauren was awarded the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award.

In 2001, Lauren launched his first line of home furnishings.

In 2002, Lauren was inducted into the Fashion Hall of Fame.

In 2007, Lauren celebrated the 40th anniversary of his company with a gala at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.
