Pleasant Rowland is an American educator, author, and businesswoman. She is the founder of the American Girl doll franchise.
Rowland was born on October 13, 1943, in Buffalo, New York. She is the only child of John and Ruth Rowland. Her father was an engineer and her mother was a homemaker. Rowland’s parents divorced when she was four years old, and she was raised by her mother.
Rowland attended public schools in Buffalo and graduated from high school in 1961. She then enrolled at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Rowland graduated from Allegheny College in 1965 with a bachelor’s degree in English.
After college, Rowland taught English at a high school in Chicago for two years. She then returned to her hometown of Buffalo and took a job as a reporter for the Buffalo Evening News. In 1968, Rowland married Robert N. American Girl was founded in 1986 with the release of the first doll, Samantha Parkington. The company has since released dolls representing different periods and cultures, as well as books, movies, and other products.
Rowland has been married three times. She has two daughters from her first marriage, which ended in divorce. Rowland has been married to American businessman Michael J. Shore since 1992.
