O. Henry was an American writer. His real name was William Sydney Porter. He was born on September 11, 1862, in Greensboro, North Carolina. His father, Algernon Sidney Porter, was a doctor. His mother, Mary Jane Virginia Swaim Porter, died when William was three years old. William’s father remarried in 1866. William had three half-siblings: Margaret Louise, Alice Ruth, and Nathaniel Porter.
William was educated at home by his stepmother and father until he was fifteen years old. He then attended his uncle’s school in Greensboro. In 1879, he was sent to live with his aunt in rural North Carolina to recover from a case of typhoid fever. While there, he began to write.
In 1881, William’s father died, and he was forced to return to Greensboro to support his family. He took a job as a clerk in a local store. In 1882, he became a licensed pharmacist. In 1884, he began working for the Greensboro Patriot, a newspaper. In 1886, he moved to New York City to work for a newspaper called The World.
In 1887, William’s aunt died, and he returned to Greensboro. He took a job as a bookkeeper for a local bank. In 1888, he was caught embezzling money from the bank and was sent to prison. While in prison, he began writing short stories.
After his release from prison in 1897, William moved to Austin, Texas, where he took a job as a reporter for a local newspaper. It was here that he began using the pen name “O. Henry.” In 1898, he married Athol Estes. The couple had one child, Margaret Worth Porter.
In 1901, O. Henry’s wife died of tuberculosis. O. Henry continued to write short stories and gained a reputation as a master of the short story form. In 1903, he published his first book of short stories, Cabbages and Kings. In 1904, he moved to New York City.
In 1905, O. Henry’s second book of short stories, The Four Million, was published. This book was very successful and established O. Henry as one of the most popular writers of his time. He continued to write short stories and published several more books of short stories over the next few years.
In 1910, O. Henry married again, this time to Zell Ingram. The couple had one child, Margaret Worth Porter Ingram.
O. Henry continued to write short stories until his death from pneumonia on June 5, 1910.
