Noel Redding was born on December 25, 1945, in Folkestone, Kent, England. His parents were Olive (née Willett) and Harold Redding. He had two sisters, Gillian and Jane. Redding was educated at the Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys in Canterbury.
Redding began playing the guitar at the age of 15. He was influenced by rock and roll music and artists such as Chuck Berry and Scotty Moore. He also developed an interest in blues music. In 1962, he formed a band called the Noel Redding Band. The band performed at local clubs and pubs.
In 1964, Redding met Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix was impressed with Redding’s guitar playing and asked him to join his band, the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Redding agreed and became the band’s bass player. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was one of the most successful rock bands of the 1960s. They released three albums: Are You Experienced (1967), Axis: Bold as Love (1967), and Electric Ladyland (1968).
The Jimi Hendrix Experience disbanded in 1969. Redding then formed the Noel Redding Band. The band released two albums: Noel Redding Band (1970) and Clonakilty Cowboys (1971).
In 1972, Redding moved to Woodstock, New York. He recorded an album with his girlfriend, Carla Olson, called Another Side of This Life. The album was not commercially successful.
Redding continued to play music and tour with various bands throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1986, he released his autobiography, Are You Experienced? The Inside Story of the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Redding died of a heart attack on May 11, 2003, at his home in Clonakilty, Ireland. He was 57 years old.
