Muslim Magomayev (1942-2011) was a Soviet and Azerbaijani singer, composer and actor. He was born in Baku, Azerbaijan SSR, to a family of ethnic Azerbaijanis. His father, Magomayev Safar Aliyevich, was a well-known composer and his mother, Zulfiya Magomayeva, was a singer. Muslim was the eldest of three children; his younger brother, Rauf, is also a singer and composer, and his sister, Leyla, is an actress.
Muslim began his musical education at the age of five, studying piano and voice. He later studied at the Baku Conservatory, where he graduated with honors in 1965.
Muslim’s career began in the early 1960s, when he started performing as a soloist with the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic Orchestra. He quickly gained popularity both in Azerbaijan and throughout the Soviet Union. In 1966, he released his first album, “The Voice of Azerbaijan”, which was an instant hit.
In 1967, Muslim starred in his first film, “The White Sun of the Desert”. The film was a huge success, and Muslim’s performance earned him critical acclaim.
In 1968, Muslim toured the United States with the Soviet state choir. The tour was a huge success, and Muslim’s popularity increased dramatically.
In the 1970s, Muslim released a number of successful albums and starred in several films. He also toured extensively throughout the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
In 1980, Muslim moved to Moscow to pursue a solo career. He released several successful albums in the 1980s and early 1990s, and toured extensively throughout the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
