Mildred Harris (born October 19, 1901) was an American actress. She began her career as a child actress in the 1910s and appeared in a number of silent films. She achieved success in the 1920s, appearing in a number of films, including the first two Our Gang shorts.
Harris was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the daughter of Jennie (née Johnson) and Walter S. Harris. She had two brothers, Walter Jr. and Frank. Harris’s parents divorced when she was young and her mother remarried. Her stepfather, Harry Gantz, was an insurance salesman.
Harris began her career as a child actress in the 1910s. She appeared in a number of silent films, including The Perils of Pauline (1914), The Exploits of Elaine (1914), and The Million Dollar Mystery (1914). Harris achieved success in the 1920s, appearing in a number of films, including the first two Our Gang shorts, Our Gang (1922) and Our Gang Follies of 1922 (1922). She also appeared in The Freshman (1925), The College Widow (1927), and Show People (1928).
Harris’s career declined in the 1930s and she appeared in a number of low-budget films. She retired from acting in 1940.
Harris was married three times. Her first husband was actor Charles Chaplin, whom she married in 1918. The couple divorced in 1920. Harris’s second husband was actor Richard Arlen, whom she married in 1921. The couple divorced in 1927. Harris’s third husband was businessman Edward Norris, whom she married in 1928. The couple divorced in 1940.
Harris had two children, both with Chaplin. Her son, Charles Jr., was born in 1919 and died in 1966. Her daughter, Geraldine, was born in 1924 and died in 2014.
Harris died on August 23, 1944, at the age of 42.
