Michelle Phillips (born Holly Michelle Gilliam; June 4, 1944) is an American singer, songwriter and actress. She gained fame as a member of the pop group The Mamas & the Papas in the 1960s and later had a successful solo career.
Phillips was born in Long Beach, California, the only child of Joyce Leon (née Poole) and Gardner Burnett Gilliam. Her father was a United States Navy officer who died when she was two years old. Her mother remarried and moved the family to Mexico City, where Phillips was raised. Phillips attended high school at the American School Foundation in Mexico City, where she graduated in 1962.
Phillips began her career as a model in Mexico City before moving to Los Angeles in 1964. She met John Phillips while working as a waitress at a club called The Trip. The two began dating and were married in December of that year.
The couple had one child together, daughter Mackenzie Phillips, before divorcing in 1968. Phillips continued to pursue her music career, and in 1969 she formed the group The Mamas & the Papas with her then-husband John Phillips and Denny Doherty. The group was successful, releasing several hit singles including “California Dreamin'” and “Monday, Monday”.
The group disbanded in 1971 and Phillips began a solo career. She released her self-titled debut album in 1974 and followed it with 1976’s Victim of Romance. Her third album, Star Quality, was released in 1981.
Phillips has appeared in several films and television shows over the years, including The Last Tycoon (1976), Knots Landing (1987-1988) and Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990-1991). She has also released several books, including a memoir entitled California Dreamin’: The True Story of the Mamas & the Papas (1986).
Phillips is currently married to actor Dennis Quaid. The couple has been married since 2004 and have three children together.
Phillips has an estimated net worth of $5 million. She has earned her wealth through her successful music and acting careers.
