Michael McDonald is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known for his work as a member of the Doobie Brothers and as a solo artist. McDonald has also collaborated with a number of other artists, including Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins, and Toto. He has been a member of the Doobie Brothers since 1975 and has also released five solo albums. McDonald has won five Grammy Awards and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Early Life
McDonald was born on February 12, 1952, in St. Louis, Missouri. His father was a jazz trumpet player and his mother was a singer. McDonald began playing the piano at an early age and later took up the guitar. He attended McCluer High School in Ferguson, Missouri. After graduation, he enrolled at Berkeley Community College. He dropped out after one semester and moved to Los Angeles in 1971.
Career
McDonald began his career as a session musician in Los Angeles. He played on a number of records, including Steely Dan’s “Peg” and Toto’s “Hold the Line”. He also toured with Loggins and Messina. In 1975, he joined the Doobie Brothers as a keyboardist and singer. He appeared on the band’s albums “Takin’ It to the Streets” and “Livin’ on the Fault Line”. He also co-wrote the hits “What a Fool Believes” and “Minute by Minute”. McDonald left the Doobie Brothers in 1982 to pursue a solo career.
His first solo album, “If That’s What It Takes”, was released in 1982. The album featured the hit single “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)”. His second album, “No Lookin’ Back”, was released in 1985. The album featured the hit single “Sweet Freedom”. McDonald’s third album, “Take It to Heart”, was released in 1990. The album featured the hit single “I Can Let Go Now”.
In 1987, McDonald collaborated with Kenny Loggins on the hit single “What a Fool Believes”. The song won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year. In 1988, he collaborated with Toto on the hit single “Africa”. In 1989, he collaborated with James Ingram on the hit single “Yah Mo B There”.
In 1994, McDonald released his fourth solo album, “Blink of an Eye”. The album featured the hit single “I Get Lost”. In 2000, he released his fifth solo album, “Blue Obsession”. The album featured the hit single “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”.
In 2010, McDonald reunited with the Doobie Brothers for their 40th anniversary tour. The tour was a success and led to a new album, “Southbound”, which was released in 2014.
