Merry Clayton is an American soul and gospel singer, who is best known for her work as a backup singer for various artists including Ray Charles, Carole King, and Sheryl Crow.

Born on December 25, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Clayton comes from a family of musicians. Her father was a trumpet player and her mother was a gospel singer. Clayton began singing in her local church choir at a young age.

Clayton’s career as a backup singer began in the early 1960s when she was asked to sing with Ray Charles on his album, “Genius + Soul = Jazz”. She went on to sing with other artists including Carole King, Sheryl Crow, and Don Henley. Clayton has also released several solo albums, including “Merry Clayton” (1971), “Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow” (1972), and “Southern Nights” (1977).

Clayton has been married twice. Her first marriage was to jazz trumpeter Roger Neumann from 1968 to 1974. Her second marriage was to actor/director/producer Lenny Niehaus from 1976 to 1981. She has two daughters from her first marriage, Dara and Tara Neumann.
