Fact | Despite being known as a singer, Meat Loaf has only sung in two films - The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) and Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny (2006). The reason for this is because he wanted to be taken seriously as an actor and not get typecast into singing roles. |
Meat Loaf, born Marvin Lee Aday on September 27, 1947, is an American musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and actor. He is noted for his powerful, wide-ranging voice and theatrical live shows. His Bat Out of Hell trilogy of albums—Bat Out of Hell, Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell, and Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose—have sold more than 50 million copies worldwide.
Aday was born in Dallas, Texas, to Wilma Artie (née Hildebrand), a schoolteacher and a member of the Vo-di-o-do Girls gospel quartet, and Orvis Wesley Aday, a police officer. Aday’s mother was of German descent. Aday’s father was an alcoholic who would often go on binges for days at a time. When Aday was seven years old, his father left home for good. His mother took Aday and his sister Kay to live with her parents in Tyler, Texas.
Aday’s first musical experience was singing in his church choir. He later took piano lessons from a woman who lived down the street. He attended Robert E. Lee High School in Tyler. He was a member of the track team and the Lee High School Marching Band. He graduated from Lee High School in 1965.
After high school, Aday attended the University of Texas at Austin. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He did not graduate from the university.
In 1966, Aday moved to Los Angeles, California, where he changed his name to Meat Loaf. He worked as a session musician and recorded his first album, Stoney & Meatloaf, with rock singer Stoney Murphy. The album was not a success and Meat Loaf was unable to find work as a musician.
He began working as an actor and made his film debut in the 1971 film The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He also had small roles in films such as National Lampoon’s Animal House (1978) and Roadie (1980).
In 1977, Meat Loaf collaborated with songwriter Jim Steinman on the album Bat Out of Hell. The album was a commercial success, selling more than 43 million copies worldwide. It remains one of the best-selling albums of all time.
Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell was released in 1993 and reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart. The album featured the hit single “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)”.
Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose was released in 2006 and reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart. The album featured the hit single “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now”.
Meat Loaf has appeared in several films and television shows throughout his career. He had a recurring role on the television series Celebrity Apprentice from 2010 to 2011.
Meat Loaf has been married three times. His first marriage was to Leslie Edmonds from 1971 to 1979. His second marriage was to Deborah Gillespie from 1984 to 1992. His third marriage is to Marlene Willoughby, which began in 2001. Meat Loaf has three children: Pearl Aday, Amanda Aday, and Dante Aday.
Meat Loaf has an estimated net worth of $45 million. He has earned his fortune through his successful music career. He has sold more than 80 million records worldwide.

1 | In the early 1980s, I got into a war with my management - they just kept on suing me and I lost everything. So I had to go out on tour to make sure the electricity stayed on. |
2 | It's like people call me a rock star or this or that. And I go, 'Don't call me that. I don't think of myself in those terms. If you have to call me anything, call me a chameleon. |
3 | There was a band in Australia named Midnight Oil, and they were a very, very political, and they literally hit you over the head with a hammer. U2 sometimes can hit you over the head with a rubber hammer. |
4 | You know, people think I named myself Meat Loaf, even though I didn't. And they think anyone who would name himself Meat Loaf couldn't have an IQ higher than four. |
5 | When I do film, I really take on roles and I take on characters. |
6 | When your name is on the marquee, you either get the glory or you get the hits. |
7 | A lot of actors, they know the camera's there, and if somebody moves around or makes noise or whatever then they get all distracted, but I pretty much lock in. You can't distract me too much. |
8 | For the past 32 years, I've done nothing outside the entertainment business. I've had some real highs and some real lows, but I love the work so much that I never once thought of quitting. |
9 | I'm asthmatic. I was a lot bigger back then, and I still get winded on stage today. But I've learned how to pace it now. I have musical breaks in there. |
10 | Just ask anybody who is getting old - everything starts hurting. For me, it's my shoulders, thumbs, knees and feet. |
11 | My gigs are built on improvisation: I go out there and I'm like the Energizer bunny. |
12 | My life's far too complicated to be summed up in one song. It would take 20 just to represent one single day. |
13 | The day that I ever become hip... please shoot me and put me outta my misery! |
14 | There's no explanation for success. Success just comes out of life. |
15 | Rock n' Roll came from the slaves singing gospel in the fields. Their lives were hell and they used music to lift out of it, to take them away. That's what rock n' roll should do - take you to a better place. |
16 | I never fit in. I am a true alternative. And I love being the outcast. That's my role in life, to be an outcast. |
17 | As most people know, I am a vampire, so I have no reflection. Every day, I paste a picture of someone else on the mirror. |
18 | 'Hell in a Handbasket' is not dealing with the political nature of the country. It's dealing with the humanity and the compassion of the world. |
19 | I'm an actor. I started as an actor. I started on Broadway doing 'Hair' and Shakespeare in the Park. |
20 | Rock and roll is about getting free beer and getting laid. |
21 | [asked in 2003 interview whether he was born in 1947 or 1951] 1951. I have it on my passport and driving license. [I said 1947 in my autobiography] because I just wanted to maintain a constant lie. I was born in 1951 but see what a great thing it is, because everybody asks me? And I can keep it up--I can tell you I was born in 1952. Names and ages piss me off. So I just continually lie. |
