Maurice Béjart was born in Marseille, France on January 1, 1927. His parents were both ballet dancers and his sister was a ballerina as well. Béjart began his ballet training at the age of eight. He studied at the Paris Opera Ballet School and the Royal Ballet School in London. He joined the Paris Opera Ballet in 1945 and danced with them for six years. He also danced with the Royal Ballet and the London Festival Ballet.

In 1954, Béjart founded his own ballet company, the Ballet du XXe Siècle, in Brussels, Belgium. The company quickly gained a reputation for its innovative and avant-garde productions. Béjart choreographed over 100 ballets during his career. Some of his most famous works include “The Nutcracker,” “Swan Lake,” and “The Rite of Spring.” He also staged ballets based on the works of William Shakespeare, Federico García Lorca, and Pablo Picasso.

Béjart was awarded the Legion of Honor in France and the Order of Leopold in Belgium. He died in 2007 at the age of 80.
