Matthew Nicholls is a British historian who specializes in the history of Roman art. He is the current Bayer Professor of Ancient Art and Director of the Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford.

Nicholls was born in London, England in 1965. He earned his BA and MA from the University of Oxford before going on to complete his PhD at the University of London.

Nicholls’ research interests include Roman painting, sculpture, and architecture, as well as Roman archaeology more broadly. He has published extensively on these topics, and his work has been translated into several languages.

In addition to his academic work, Nicholls is also a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4’s In Our Time, a popular history program. He has also appeared on television programs such as Horizon and The Secret Life of Buildings.

Nicholls is married to fellow historian Mary Beard. They have two children together.
